A day at school
From the door to dismissal
The same rhythm every day: time to gather, time to work and time to be outdoors.
- 8:15
Step 1: Arrival
The class teacher greets each child at the door with a handshake and a look in the eye.
- 8:30
Step 2: Morning circle
A verse, a song and some movement, then the day's plan.
- 9:00
Step 3: Main lesson
Two hours on one subject, for a few weeks at a time. Children draw and write what they learn in a book of their own.
- 11:00
Step 4: Snack and outdoors
A run in the yard, the garden or the edge of the woods in all but the worst weather.
- 11:30
Step 5: Language, music and handwork
Classes rotate through a second language, recorder or chorus, and knitting, sewing or woodwork.
- 12:30
Step 6: Lunch
Families send lunch. The class eats together, and Friday ends here.
- 1:15
Step 7: Afternoon
Monday to Thursday: painting, gardening, the class play or the long project, depending on the stage.
- 3:00
Step 8: Dismissal
Teachers walk each child to the right grown-up. After care runs until 5:30 p.m.
